Weight Loss - Aim and Be Steady

So, you think you are ready to lose weight but you have some questions or issues that you need to address? The following may help you in your quest. Don't forget that everyone is different in their approach, goals and motivation:

Aim for Steady Weight Loss

Strive to lose no more than two pounds per week. Even two pounds is a pretty aggressive weight-loss goal. A more reasonable one would be to lose one pound per week. If you lose weight more rapidly than two pounds per week, you will lose much-needed muscle as well as fat.

Eat Well

It might seem like an attractive option to severely restrict your caloric intake in an attempt to get in shape for bathing suit season. If you eat less than 500 calories each day, your body thinks that you are starving. Your metabolism may actually slow down in an attempt to conserve resources to wait out the "famine". In addition, you may experience irritability and food cravings by adopting this approach.

A better approach is to choose lower-fat foods more often. Be sure to include a variety of foods and limit your intake of processed food. Eat lean protein, whole grain products, and fruits and vegetables.

Diet Pills

A number of people have turned to appetite-suppressant pills to aid in weight loss. This may seem like an attractive option, but using these products can lead to some dire health issues. Phenylpropanolamine (PPA), an ingredient in both appetite suppressants and cold remedies, has been found to be responsible for over 200 cases of stroke each year.

As well as the increased risk of sustaining a stroke, consumers of diet pills also can experience such side effects as irritability, insomnia, fatigue, high blood pressure, irregular heart beat, and seizures.

In addition to the health risks associated with their use, diet pills are not a permanent solution to the issue of losing weight. Often, a person who chooses to use these types of products will end up gaining back all the weight he or she has lost.

Goal Setting for Weight Loss Success

If you want to lose weight and keep it off, you need to set some goals for yourself. By setting goals, you give yourself a road map to follow. It may be tempting to skip this step but if you do, your plan to lose weight is not as likely to succeed. Your goals should be specific, attainable, and measurable. In addition, your goals should be rewarding and have a time limit attached to them.
